An increasing number of private equity companies have someone or a small team responsible for generating ideas for investment opportunities. Each firm handles this role slightly differently - but there are similarities across firms.
The origination team follows changes in the unquoted and quoted corporate arena looking for opportunities for investment. They use current changes to predict potential future changes in order to generate investment opportunities ahead of their competitors.
Skills and experience required
To be successful in this role you will need to be able to visualise how large companies work and be able to identify areas within them where their owners could release value by selling to a private equity firm. Once identified you will have to be able to put together a good case for approaching the owners with your idea. You will work with senior investment personnel to make that approach.
Typical backgrounds for this job include equity analysis, corporate finance and accountancy.
