An ideal CV has to create a good first impression, it should be no more than 2 pages long, if necessary use an appendix to show completed deals or projects.  It should concentrate on factual information such as your personal details, your academic and professional qualifications, your career history and your key attributes and achievements. It needs to be accurate, concise, relevant and well set out to indicate that you are worth interviewing for a particular job.

Remember these points

  • Place latest experience first.
  • Keep to a maximum of two pages.
  • Do not use fancy graphics or text to impress on a CV, it should represent you as a professional person and can be seen as concealing poor content.
  • Pictures are unnecessary with most employers in the UK unless specifically requested.
  • Check spelling mistakes and grammar.
  • Bullet points are a good way of breaking up a long piece of text.
  • Customize your CV appropriately for this specific industry.
  • Indicate visa status if relevant.

Interview tips

  • Understand how the company works, a good tip is to check their website which may have more background information.
  • A positive attitude and a smile are important.
  • Present yourself to the client, it is as much a chance for you to assess the job as for the client to assess your suitability for it.
  • Prior to the interview think of examples that demonstrate you have the skills needed for the job, i.e. projects and transactions you have already worked on.
  • Arrive punctually and be smartly dressed.
  • Prepare your own questions in advance.
  • Have a look at PER's Interview preparation sheet for useful advice.
