PER continued to support the local community by sponsoring the Private Equity Foundation (PEF) on their Annual Day of Engagement last Friday
On 6th November, over 100 members of the private equity industry rose to the Private Equity Foundation’s latest challenge, to take up tools at its 2009 Annual Day of Community Engagement.
The volunteers were involved in developing an outdoor activity site in Newham, London, run by Private Equity Foundation portfolio charity, Community Links, for local
disadvantaged children and young people. The borough, which has the youngest population in the UK, also has a child poverty rate of 58 per cent.
It was a great opportunity to make a real difference to a project doing vital work to help children and young people get back on track at school or college.
PER were proud to sponsor the sweatshirts for the day.

PER in Germany
PER visited Frankfurt and Munich on 21st & 22nd October, meeting with a number of funds from across the buyout, growth, fund of fund and secondaries sectors.
The mood was cautious, reflecting a slower than expected pick-up in quality dealflow over the past quarter. Earlier this year there was real optimism that by Q4 2009 we would see a number of good assets coming on to the market, but it appears the return in buyout candidates in particular has been slower in the German market than anticipated. More positively, funds remain relatively pleased with their own portfolios; although some assets are causing headaches, by and large investors remain satisfied the worst is behind them. Consequently there is a growing confidence for 2010, but concerns remain that deal volume may not pick up again until well into the year.
On the recruitment front, new activity reflected this cautious optimism for the coming year. There are strong signs of a growing number of new positions being recruited for over the coming months, with funds starting to put in place the teams they need for the new challenges they foresee in 2010. The trend will be generally for analyst and associate level hires, with the emphasis being on identifying the best new talent to develop and bring on as new deal activity picks up over the next 12 months. Recruitment levels won’t return to the 2007-8 heyday for a little while yet, but candidates will see a greater range of opportunities than at any time since the summer of last year.

PER in Switzerland
PER spent a few days in Switzerland catching up with existing clients and meeting potential new ones.
We had the opportunity to hear their thoughts on the market and plans going forward. Although it is believed that the buy-out market will remain tight for a bit longer, opportunities are still being reviewed and it is expected that deals will increase towards Q4/09. The secondaries space has been quite active with a substantial increase in deal flow which has kept some funds busy throughout the year.
In terms of recruitment, the funds in Switzerland have not experienced substantial lay-offs and teams will be looking to add additional professionals towards Q3-Q4. Areas that will be in demand will be fund of fund and secondaries experience as well as venture, particularly within the renewable energy space.
The funds are open to review candidates with international backgrounds but they must be committed to living in Switzerland and speak the relevant languages required.

PER in Stockholm
PER met with a number of private equity funds in
Stockholm recently across all fund sizes.
The mood amongst the funds was surprisingly upbeat and there was a real sense of promise for the coming 6-12 months.
Most of the funds had identified particular needs within their business for the coming year, and expected the latter part of 2009 and the start of next year to be busy times for recruitment. These needs ranged right across the experience range. International experience, which could be gained from a spell in London or
New York , was universally highly regarded, but not considered essential.
A willingness to be based in Stockholm, irrespective of nationality, was often regarded as pre-requisite, with offices in Oslo, Copenhagen and Helsinki not expected to be as active in the near future as the headquarters of larger funds based in
Stockholm .
